Tom Johnson Summer School 2014
Posted on June 13, 2014

It’s hard to believe that the last Tom Johnson was a year ago, but here we are; it’s that time of the year again! This year, Labour Youth brings the 20th annual Tom Johnson Summer School to Portlaoise, on the 20-22 June. The annual summer school is named after Tom Johnson, who served as Leader of the Labour Party from 1917-27.
Each year, Labour Youth hosts this event for members and supporters of the Labour Party as a means of discussing and debating our hopes and aspirations for Ireland. Over the course of the weekend we’ll be hearing from guest speakers, participating in panel discussions and workshops and hosting hustings for the Labour Party Leadership elections.

Sunday morning - Tom Johnson Summer School

From the appointment of a Minister for Children & Youth Affairs as a full Cabinet post, to the Children's Rights Referendum, to the decision to establish a Children's First Agency, it is clear that we are living in a time of huge reform in the area of children's rights in Ireland, making our first panel on Sunday very apt.
Posing the question "Legal Protections or Lip Service - What Protections Are Our Children Offered Under the Legal System?" we were given 4 different perspectives on the issue of child protection.

This afternoon's panel about 'The Illegitimate Debt' is also featured in this blog post written by party member Desmond O'Toole.
It is quite a task to plot a path through a wide-ranging discussion which encompassed cancelling the illegitimate debt demanded of the Global South, the burden of bank debt that has hollowed out the finances of the Irish state and the impact of debt on Irish families in local neighbourhoods.
