Tom Johnson 2013

It’s hard to believe that the last Tom Johnson was a year ago, but here we are; it’s that time of the year again! This year, Labour Youth brings the 20th annual Tom Johnson Summer School to Portlaoise, on the 20-22 June. The annual summer school is named after Tom Johnson, who served as Leader of the Labour Party from 1917-27.

Each year, Labour Youth hosts this event for members and supporters of the Labour Party as a means of discussing and debating our hopes and aspirations for Ireland. Over the course of the weekend we’ll be hearing from guest speakers, participating in panel discussions and workshops and hosting hustings for the Labour Party Leadership elections.

Our keynote speaker is Professor Emeritus of Social Epidemiology at the University of Nottingham, author of The Spirit Level, Richard Wilkinson. We’re looking forward to hearing from a wide range of speakers from the worlds of academia, trade unionism, youth & community work, politics and social justice activism. We’re also looking forward to presenting the Irish Refugee Council with the Jim Kemmy Thirst For Justice Award. Labour Youth are proud to present this award to the Irish Refugee Council to acknowledge their work on Direct Provision. We look forward to continuing to work with the IRC and other organisations to see an end to Direct Provision.

You can view the full programme and list of speakers here. It’s not too late to buy your ticket! But they’re nearly sold out, so if you’d like to attend, please contact Marty O’Prey in Labour Head Office – martin.oprey@labour.ie

Don’t forget you can follow the Tom Johnson Summer School online with #TJ14 and visit @labour and @labouryouth on Twitter.
