Restoration to consumer confidence vital to pork industry

Posted on December 09, 2008 at 05:22 PM

There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel with regard to this meat contamination fiasco.

Farmers, meat processors and workers have all been plunged into a crisis not of their own making and the longer the problem continues, the harder it will be to fix.

I believe that the priority has to be to get Irish pork products back on to supermarket shelves and butcher shops.

That's the only way we can increase consumer confidence and safeguard the thousands of jobs that are now at risk in the industry.

Today in the Dail, Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore asked Brian Cowen for some clarity as to when we might expect to see this happening. Unfortunately the Taoiseach was unable to give us any clear idea at all!

We need decisiveness and leadership from the Govt, but unfortunately we're not getting it.
