Sherlock - Why I am voting Yes on May 25th
Posted on May 23, 2018
Our TD for Cork East, tell's us why he is voting Yes on May 25th.
For me, it’s simple: Like it or not, Ireland already has abortion. The question is not whether we want abortion here, it’s whether we want safe abortion here. I want my country to have a public health system where no woman or girl is ever again forced to travel abroad in sorrow or shame, or made to endanger her life in silence or secrecy.

2017 Winner of Richard O’Carroll Empowerment Bursary Announced
Posted on November 15, 2017
Congratulations to the 2017 winner of the Labour Party Richard O’Carroll Empowerment Bursary, Aaron Mills.
Despite the chill in the morning air, there was a very warm welcome for Labour Party representatives in the home of Aaron Mills in Clonshaugh Avenue, Coolock.
Grandparents, aunts, neighbours gathered around Aaron Mills, excited that he is the 2017 recipient of the Richard O’Carroll Empowerment Bursary, first awarded in 2016 as part of the Labour Party's centenary commemoration of the 1916 Rising.

#OurFuture - Labour's Alternative budget
Posted on October 05, 2017
We have made clear that we don't believe there is enough space for any tax cuts in this Budget. Instead, we have argued for the construction of 5,000 public homes, and the funding of Sláintecare (a new national strategy to build our public healthcare system) as the central points of our proposals.
Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are having a phoney war over tax cuts that will amount to between €2 and €4 per week for middle-income families. We have said that cutting school costs, reducing college fees by €1,000 next year, eliminating hospital inpatient charges, and increasing the public subsidy of childcare would save families a lot more

Marching for Choice
Posted on October 01, 2017
As proud members of the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment we marched in solidarity behind them with our own banner, flags and committed Party members.
We took to the streets once again to show our opposition to a Constitution that limits women’s access to reproductive healthcare and is a source of discrimination against all women living in Ireland.

Apply for the Richard O'Carroll Empowerment Bursary
Posted on August 02, 2017
The Labour Party’s Richard O’Carroll Empowerment Bursary is named in memory of the leader of the Labour Group on Dublin Corporation who was killed in the 1916 Easter Rising, Councillor Richard O’Carroll.
In addition to his involvement in the Dublin Labour Party, Richard O’Carroll was an official of the Brick and Stonelayers Trade Union. During the Rising, Richard was shot by a British officer on Camden Street on the 26th of April 1916. Despite being rescued by a passing bread van and brought to hospital, Richard died nine days later in Portobello Military Hospital, leaving behind his widow, Annie, and seven children.

Munster technological university would result in top honours
Posted on July 22, 2017
Opposition to the creation of technological universities has come from many quarters over recent years. The role of members of the Higher Education Authority is not to undermine stated government policy, as Seán Sherlock wrote in the Irish Examiner yesterday.
Back in March 2011, the programme for government agreed between the Labour Party and Fine Gael contained a commitment to examine the idea of a technological university split across multiple campuses in the South-East region.
This commitment was intended to clearly demonstrate a commitment to the South-East, but also reflected Labour’s view of how the higher education landscape could develop.
The idea of technological universities had emerged from the National Strategy for Higher Education to 2030, published in January 2011.

Stopping company directors from jumping ship - Ged Nash
Posted on July 19, 2017
The report from the Company Law Review Group takes over 150 pages to decide: “Yerra, ’twill do”.
In my report to Government two years ago on the sale and liquidation of Clerys, I wrote of the widespread public concern about the way Clerys was closed and how those whose livelihoods depended on the business were treated.
When a company becomes insolvent, then clearly not all creditors can be paid in full. Hence the vital importance of ensuring that there has been fair dealing with the company’s assets and that all property that should be available is used to pay off the company’s debts.

How small is the fiscal space? That’s Leo Varadkar’s big headache
Posted on July 05, 2017
In yesterday's Irish Examiner, Brendan Howlin wrote about why fiscal space will be a headache for Leo.
AS I write, harried officials in the Department of Finance are looking down the back of every sofa in Merrion Street.
The National Economic Dialogue (NED) took place over two days last week and the fiscal space isn’t nailed down. The new Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, is talking about hidden fiscal space. That’s a far cry from the budget transparency we were promised.
After all, the NED is supposed to discuss what to do with the money available on budget day.
Forget Shane Ross and the judges. This is the real mess on the Taoiseach’s plate.

24/7 cardiac care for the South East is urgently needed.
Posted on July 04, 2017
Today we attended the #OurLivesMatter rally outside the Dáil for quality, round the clock, cardiac care for the South East.
The idea that people in the South East can't get 24/7 cardiac care is unacceptable - @alankellylabour pic.twitter.com/AXtDGxv34J
