As Chairperson of Sallins Community Council since 2013 I have driven several campaigns, the most successful of which was our campaign for community lands and amenities; the 2000+ submissions we gathered during the Local Area Plan process resulted in Kildare County Council acquiring 33 acres for community use in December 2016.
The other major campaign I have led since February 2018 is the Sallins Road Safety campaign. This included presenting a series of proposals to Kildare County Council in October 2018 and organising (with the Loakman family) the Silent March in November 2018 which was attended by over a thousands people. KCC have responded by implementing several significant measures to improve road safety and more are planned in 2019.
I have worked to develop the Community Council into an effective and focussed community organisation that is respected by KCC officials and elected representatives.
I believe in the strength of people working together to improve their community and I see this every day in the work of sports coaches, scout leaders, activists, teachers, Tidy Towns volunteers and many others: it is they who inspire me.
Working in special education for nearly 30 years, I have been Principal of a special school for 17 of those years. The other influential work experience in my life was as a volunteer with the Simon Community for sixteen years. I worked in the shelter, as Chairperson of the Campaigns Group, and for three years as Chairperson of the Board of Directors. In my professional and voluntary work I have seen the damage caused by bad political decisions. I chose the Labour party because of its corruption-free record and its commitment to equality. I was the only local politician/representative in this area who actively campaigned for a YES vote in the Marriage Equality referendum and in the Repeal the 8th referendum.
A native of Drimnagh in Dublin, I have lived in Sallins since 2003 with my wife Brenda and two teenage children.
If you live in the Naas municipal area and wish to contact me about any local issues, please feel free to do so. If you’d like to help locally, I’d love to hear from you.
